Turpentine is a vegetable oil produced by distilling the resin obtained from pine trees. It allows you to adjust the concentration of oil paint quite easily. But it is volatile and can increase drying speed and lower brightness when used in excess which can negatively affect the adhesion and durability of the paint. Rather than using it alone it is suggested that you use it with linseed oil or poppy oil, which are drying oils, in a 1:1 ratio.
