Cadmium Red pigments first rose to popularity during the early 20th Century, readily praised by artists for their vibrance and mass tonal strength. These intense, opaque new colours offered a safer alternative to highly toxic traditional pigments such as Vermillion, composed of pure mercurial sulphide.

Concerns regarding the toxicity of materials continue to evolve and remain a chief priority throughout Derivan’s manufacturing process. With artists wellbeing in mind, our traditional Cadmium range are composed of acid-washed pigments, a method that eliminates all bio-available heavy metals. 

Furthering safe practice, Derivan have developed this radiant new colour as an alternative to time-honoured Cadmium pigments. The result is a bright, boisterous light red that retains the full range of effects often attributed to Cadmium colours, without compromise to quality.
